Creating an innovative digital installation in just 1 month

In October 2015, Melbourne Polytechnic approached Two Bulls to create a new digital experience for their retail spaces. With a deadline of just one month, we had to start from scratch and deliver a completed product.
They Approached Us
Melbourne Polytechnic didn’t want an ordinary installation, they wanted something new and exciting. Livening up retail spaces for students is tough work, they don’t impress easily, so something truly special was required to capture attention, while also being useful for staff and students alike.
Our Solution Was
Using our background with app development and the Microsoft Kinect platform, we created an innovative installation, designed to capture the interest of anyone walking by, while also being practical for those using it.
The installation features a stream of study areas that Melbourne Polytechnic offers, displaying it in a 3D environment and broadcast to a 70” display. The user can use hand gestures to explore the steam of study areas, the literally “pull” it down to a nearby iPad, allowing them to personally engage with it.
The Results Were
The combination of large display and iPad works to create amazing engagement, while also offering privacy for the user to focus on the information they need. Anyone walking past the centre is instantly entranced by the installation, creating great feedback for Melbourne Polytechnic.
Importantly, this installation also allows Melbourne Polytechnic staff to engage with students over their study needs, allowing them to quickly and accurately help students in need.
This first step has been a fantastic look at how technology can improve the user experience in schools in unexpected ways. It opens a world of opportunity for future updates, making the study experience more intuitive for all involved.
Heading into 2016, we look forward to continuing to develop our relationship with Melbourne Polytechnic, expanding our installations capabilities and supporting students of the future.
